Wonderful story. John's response that better cars means that customers will abandon Steve the mechanic and these service roles are therefore less likely to exist (with self-service eventually disintermediating everyone but the driver just won't fly (unless they give drivers their own pocket-sized nano manufacturing factory that will replicate any maintenance free car you can imagine). Until then, I plan to offer mechanics a place they can share their stories about drivers and the tools they use to fix cars.
