Jeff, good posting. Colin I would like to hear your ideas on procrastination.

Hi. I'm an educator and counselor. I've taught for 15 years. I am not going to disagree with the criticism of schools except for one thing: schools, teachers, administrators DO CARE. There are disinterested paycheck-collecting educators but VIRTUALLY all of the rest CARE. Trouble is - when it comes to schools, we're driving a slow-responding Cadillac when we need a hi-perfomance Acura. Our political leaders are requiring us to toe the line for NCLB and standards set by AP and ACT and colleges. Please GET INVOLVED locally! Support your local teachers. They ARE your and your chilrens' allies, not your enemies. PLEASE HELP US RE-TOOL this vehicle we're all driving. Learn from what Bill Gates is TRYING to do. Talk to your legislators. I love intelligent, creative, insightful cartoons, music performances and the kids that produce them. Really!

Hello i am currently a student in college. I have been also told i was gifted. But I never really cared for homework and really disliked it. My mother used to be just like you pushing me to do my hw. She would have me sit there working out every problem until i finished everything kicking and screaming. This continued on until about 7th grade when she remarried. She didnt have the time like she did before due to marriage and work. I went back to my old ways and just relied on my good memory and listening skills. This works until you get into college. Of the classes that im naturally gifted in you could drop me into them with no experience and i could teach them even better then the instructors. But with the other classes which im not good at naturally are hurting me big time. And like alot of other individuals are saying hw is the key to learning new material. You can be the best in one or two things but you cant be the best in everything. Teach your son that to study and do his hw. So later on he wont be in my shoes.

kill myself

Right now, I am trying to sit down and do some E&M (college physics) homework. I'm typing here to distract myself so I don't have to do it. I've had this problem for the last three years. I graduated my high school with honors and additional credits, and in my first year of college I was taking 22 credits, working, and getting straight A's without studying. After that, I declined and got my first C's, D's, and F's in school in the following few years of college. I could have graduated in four years, but now will do so in six. Why am I doing so badly?

Homework. I can't do homework anymore. I can't take it. Sometimes I feel that I'd rather be dead than do more homework. That's not a suicidal threat, I'm just trying to display my inner emotions about homework. I think I have some kind of psychological block against it because I've been fighting this feeling for years. I can't get rid of it, and the distractions (such as typing on an internet blog) only come as a consequence of my attempts to do homework. After skipping a semester of college to gather my thoughts, I have run into the same brick wall that took me from one of the first in the race to one of the last.

Homework is the worst thing that's ever happened to me.

It's great that your son was able to work out his river homework by illustrating a cartoon about it, but it's bullshit that the teacher disapproved because it was on the wrong paper. Just focus on his talents, and educate him that there are certain people in the world that are bullshit, because in reality there are, and you do need to know how to get around them, so it will be a valuable lesson for him... keep him happy, find a way that it will be rewarding for him...i.e. turn math into a lesson on how an artist would need math to survive in the world, economy, etc. just don't give in

I have the same situation, but what do I do? Let him drop out at age 13? I'm at a loss...

Holy crap! idk! We must be genetic twins! I remember my freshmen years...I had to get the dean of the college to sign a waiver to allow me to take all the classes I took at one time. They didn't know it, but I was working full-time on top. I almost never went home. I often slept at college doing homework day and night.

Now, I am a month behind on my E&M homework. 2 months behind on my Physical Chemistry homework...I am supposed to graduate this year, but it is mathematically impossible!!! arg!

I don't know what it is. This year...I just can't do it...I can't...I don't understand...I even quit my job! Now I have free time, but no completed homework! I am literally driving myself insane. I would give someone my new car, my house, my collection of firearms, my thousands of dollars worth of computers and electronics, and even the clothes on my back if they could help me understand why I CAN'T DO HOMEWORK!
